Wearable shipments jumped 126.9 percent year-over-year in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to new data from IDC. Vendors shipped 27.4 million units in the said period, with gains from sales of fitness trackers and the Apple Watch. Throughout 2015, vendors shipped 78.1 million units, an increase of 171.6 percent over 2014. The new strong interest in wearables indicates more mass-market appeal than has previously been seen in this segment. "It shows that wearables are not just for the technophiles and early adopters; wearables can exist and are welcome in the mass market," IDC research manager Ramon Llamas said. Llamas added that there is still plenty of room for expansion.
